This article deals with the complex relationships — involving the various interests of the French, the British, and the emergent United States - which existed in the important theatre formed by the eastern Caribbean during the period which led up to the Franco-American Quasi-War of circa 1798-1801. In a situation affected both by war and revolution, American freighters were becoming an increasingly significant factor in the economic calculations made by colonial administrations.
