The embassy of 1685, of which the Journal du voyage de Siam, among other works of the abbé de Choisy (1644-1724) provides a valuable account, was the most important delegation sent to Siam by France in the 17th century. The venture had, ostensibly, a missionary purpose, seeking to convert to Christianity the King of Siam (who, it was wrongly believed, was prepared to take this step), and his people with him. The chevalier de Chaumont, who undertook this aspect of the negotiations, only succeeded in gaining some symbolic concessions for Siamese Christians, although he engaged France in considerable military manœuvres to the advantage of Siam.
