A Contemporary' s accounts of the French embassy to Siam in 1685 : the Journal and Mémoires of the abbé de Choisy (1644-1724)

The embassy of 1685, of which the Journal du voyage de Siam, among other works of the abbé de Choisy (1644-1724) provides a valuable account, was the most important delegation sent to Siam by France in the 17th century. The venture had, ostensibly, a missionary purpose, seeking to convert to Christianity the King of Siam (who, it was wrongly believed, was prepared to take this step), and his people with him. The chevalier de Chaumont, who undertook this aspect of the negotiations, only succeeded in gaining some symbolic concessions for Siamese Christians, although he engaged France in considerable military manœuvres to the advantage of Siam. Behind this façade, however, the Jesuit Tachard, instructed by the P. de La Chaise, the king's confessor, as to what he should do, initiated secret discussions with the powerful Siamese minister, Constance Phaulkon. It was he who was the " véritable ambassadeur ", and we read the account of his commercial and political negotiations in the posthumous Mémoires of Choisy, when the author can now tell all, " sans déguisement ".L'ambassade de 1685, dont le Journal du voyage de Siam, parmi d'autres ouvrages de l'abbé de Choisy (1644-1724) nous fournit un témoignage précieux fut la plus importante des délégations envoyées par la France au Siam au XVIIe siècle. L'entreprise eut ostensiblement un but missionnaire, cherchant à convertir au christianisme le, roi de Siam (qui, crut-on à tort, y était prêt), et avec lui, son peuple. Le chevalier de Chaumont, qui se chargea de cet aspect des négociations, ne réussit cependant qu'à gagner quelques concessions symboliques pour les chrétiens siamois, bien qu'il impliquât la France dans des manœuvres militaires considérables à l'avantage du Siam. Derrière cette façade, pourtant, le jésuite Tachard, instruit quant à ses devoirs par le P. de La Chaise, confesseur du roi, eut des discussions secrètes avec le puissant ministre du Siam, Constance Phaulkon. Ce fut lui « le véritable ambassadeur », et on peut lire le récit de ses négociations commerciales et politiques principalement dans les Mémoires posthumes de Choisy où l'auteur peut tout dire, « sans déguisement ».Parish Richard J.
