To demonstrate the specific effects of the 1929 depression as seen in Togolese economy and society, the paper underlines two case studies. On the one hand, the ruination of food crop growers in the South by the rise in customs duties and the fall in the market-price of tropical produce. Until then the responsibility of Togolese traders, food crop production and exportation passed into the hands of European firms. On the other hand, the construction of a railway line and the transfer of the Kabre towards the lands thus opened to trading economy.
