The décision of the black leader Toussaint Louverture to abandon his Spanish allies and rally to the French Republic early in 1794 is generally considered the turning point of the Haitian Revolution. Yet, in the literature it is the subject of the greatest confusion and the event remains shrouded in obscurity. Historians disagree radically as to why, when and where it took place, its relation to the emancipation decree of 16 pluviôse being at the centre of the debate. This study examines the question in depth and attempts to cast light on the rise of Tous saint in presenting a new interpretation of this little-known period.
