The case of Sri Lanka is of definite comparative and methodological interest in the study of the Great Depression. After a century of plantation growth and decline in subsistence agriculture, the economy was heavily dependent on external markets. The Chettiar banking business, the colonial government expenditure on public works, and the large expanse of small-scale Ceylonese plantations, all furthered intégration : the concept of dual economy is irrelevant and misguiding in analysing this situation.
