Among the private French companies trading with India in the eighteen-eighties, a modest one was set up by Etienne Michaux, a barrister in Paris, but a native of Bassigny (between Champagne and Lorraine), with money supplied to a great extent by some of the inhabitants of this region. As long as the privilege of the French India Company lasted, E. Michaux had to consider Ostend as his home port, with an English agent, Thomas Blake, and a ship flying impérial colours, the Comtesse de Trautmannsdorff. He opened a warehouse in Pondicherry.
