Early widowhood and gender differences. In France each year some 24 000 women aged under 55 lose their partner, compared to 6 000 men. In general, early widowhood concerns 360 000 people of whom nearly 80 % are women. These figures reflect a major phenomenon in which there is a strong sexual component, and yet although the predominance of male fatality is a factor well known by demographers and epidemiologists, early widowhood remains fairly poorly understood or is even forgotten. Such forgetfulness raises questions. In overlooking early widowhood, the questioning of gender aspects disappears from the field of sociological analysis with which it is closely linked : the inequalities between women and men which appear during early widowhood. ...
