In the present article, we try to establish the criteria for the morphological and semantic distribution of -μος / -μός nouns in Homer. The common theory suggests that in indo-european *-rao- was a single suffix which gave only adjectives. We will try here to show that this suffix was in fact originally dual. It included in indo-european two different types : one producing o-root grade nouns that indicated the result of the action and another type producing zero-root grade adjectives that indicated a capability.
