Les mythes dans les principaux discours aux villes de Dion Chrysostome : une approche de la notion d'hellénisme

Among the main speeches to the cities, the oration to the Rhodians (XXXI), the oration to the Alexandrians (XXXII), the two Tarsians (XXXIII, XXXIV) and the oration delivered at Kelainai all have in common to deal with the problem of hellenism under different angles. This work tries and approaches this notion through myths which, thanks to their major role within the paideia, stand as a most favoured means. The study of the distribution of myths according to the context of the different speeches first and foremost allows to bring out an essential fonction : that of a political usage on a general level. The choice of the myths — and particularly the fact of rejecting some of them — shows that Dio resorts to them as mirrors of his audience. This shall lead us to take into account the question of hellenic identity as regards greek racism on the one hand and fitting moral standards on the other.Parmi les principaux discours aux villes, le discours aux Rhodiens (XXXI), le discours aux Alexandrins (XXXII), les deux Tarsiques (XXXIII, XXXIV) et le discours prononcé à Kelainai (XXXIV) ont en commun de poser sous différents angles le problème de l'hellénisme. Ce travail tente une approche de cette notion par le biais des mythes qui, grâce à leur place prépondérante au sein de la paideia, en sont un véhicule privilégié. Une étude de la répartition des mythes en fonction de la situation des discours permet d'abord d'en dégager une fonction essentielle, celle d'un usage politique au sens large du terme. Le choix des mythes — et en particulier le refus de certains d'entre-eux — montre que Dion les utilise comme miroirs de son auditoire. Ceci nous amène à considérer la question de l'identité hellénique par rapport d'une part aux racines grecques et d'autre part à une attitude morale adéquate.Gangloff Anne.
