Even though the battle of Syme (January 411 B.C.) took place in a great disorder, the data provided by Thucydides in addition to a close examination of the ground seems to allow us to place the action somewhere between the island of Syme and Cape Loryma. Besides, it makes it possible for us to reconstruct the various stages of the battle. Its seems unwise to assume Astyochos had devised a scheme to entice the Athenians into a trap. It would be equally unwise to deem that the Peloponnesians found in this, their first victory on the sea, the daring they needed to cause Rhodes to defect.
