The theory of the rhetoric arts in ancient Greece contains two traditions : a practical one, organized as per the judicial discourse and the different parts that go into its making, and a more speculative one, organized as per the different skills required of the orator. In this article, we maintain that the Rhetoric to Alexander provides us with basic data for both these traditions, though they are distinct and need to be treated as such. Chapters 29-37 closely reflects parts of an ancient treatise and appear representative of the Coraxian tradition.
