Auberoche : un castrum périgourdin contemporain de l’an Mil

In the Périgord region, the deserted castrum of Auberoche allows an archaeological approach to the genesis of the stone castle and to the material culture of the rural medieval peopling. Our investigations focussed on three essential sectors that permit us to determine the global history of the site: a terrace habitat in the lower section, a segment of the upper enceinte and the main construction by which it was commanded. Despite their limited nature, these elements revealed the principal phases of the chronotopographic evolution of this castrum of public origin, from the time of its founding by Frotaire, bishop of Périgueux (991) to its definitive desertion at around 1450. Three stages can be defined. Around 980-990, on a spur fortified by a fosse, a large stone edifice, rectangular, which was both defensive and residential, was erected. It shows the emergence, which we believe to be spontaneous, of the multi-functional donjon by enclosure of the aristocratic hall within a volume increasingly militarised and vertical, under the influence of the political and social mutation generated by the power of the chatelaine. In the second half of the 11th century, a constructed enceinte completed the fortification of the castrum. At the same time, while subservient to the viscounts of Limoges, it federated as a contingent of milites and became the chef-lieu (administrative center) of a banal seigneury. In the early years of the 12th century, a low enceinte defined a subordinate habitat and shows the impact of this seigneury on the peopling of this territory. At the end of its expansion of power, and just before meeting its destiny as one of the places bitterly disputed during the Hundred Years War, the influence of castle of Auberoche extended over around 15 parishes.Le castrum déserté d’Auberoche autorise pour le Périgord une approche archéologique de la genèse du château de pierre et de la culture matérielle du peuplement rural médiéval. Les investigations se sont concentrées sur trois secteurs essentiels pour cerner dans sa globalité l’histoire du site: une terrasse d’habitat du quartier bas, un segment de la muraille de l’enceinte supérieure et la construction maîtresse qui la commandait. Malgré leur caractère limité, elles ont révélé les principales phases de l’évolution chrono-topographique de ce castrum d’origine publique, de sa fondation par Frotaire évêque de Périgueux († 991) à sa désertion définitive vers 1450. Trois étapes se distinguent. Vers 980-990, sur l’éperon fortifié d’un fossé, un puissant édifice de pierre, barlong, à la fois défensif et résidentiel, montre l’émergence, à notre sens spontanée, de la tour-maîtresse polyfonctionnelle, par enfermement de l’aula aristocratique dans un volume de plus en plus militarisé et vertical, sous l’effet de la mutation politique et sociale qui génére la puissance châtelaine. Dans la seconde moitié du XIe siècle, une enceinte maçonnée parachève la fortification du castrum, alors que celui-ci, inféodé aux vicomtes de Limoges, fédère un contingent de milites et devient le chef-lieu d’une seigneurie banale. Dans les premières décennies du XIIe siècle, une enceinte basse fixe un habitat subordonné et témoigne de l’impact de cette seigneurie sur le peuplement du terroir. Au terme de l’expansion de son pouvoir, et à la veille d’épouser le destin des places âprement disputées tout au long de la guerre de Cent ans, le château d’Auberoche étendait son ban sur une quinzaine de paroisses.Laborie Y.
