L'abbaye d'Aniane en Languedoc. Des Mauristes à l'établissement pénitentiaire

A plan to extend the terms for the protection of historical monuments covering the block of Abbey buildings at Aniane, enabled us to carry out an archivist study and gives with precision the chronology ofethe different series building campaigns. Of the medieval Abbey there is no trace left today. The arrival of the Maurists in the year 1635 overthrew the site ; the old buildings were razed to the ground, and the space inside the monastic enclosure was reorganized. The Saint-Sauveur church in the North, the adjoining cloister in the South and the four main buildings were then rebuilt. Work began in the second half ofthe XVIIth century (western main building and church), and continued until the Revolution, apparently respecting the original pattern. At the Revolution theAbbey was sold. The church became a parish church whereas the old monastery buildings where successively transformed into a cotton mill, then into a detention house in the year 1845. This new assignment did not spoil the monument ; only the heightening of the western main housing is noticeable, as well as the extension of the building eastwards and a complete refitting of the inside space. In spite ofeall these vicissitudes, the Aniane Abbey remains one of the rare complete examples of the monastic architecture in Languedoc under the old regime (before 1789).Un projet d'extension de la protection au titre des Monuments Historiques de l'ensemble des bâtiments conventuels de l'abbaye d'Aniane, nous a permis de mener une étude archivistique et de préciser la chronologie des différentes campagnes de construction. De l'abbaye médiévale, il ne reste plus aucune trace aujourd'hui. L'arrivée des Mauristes en 1635 va bouleverser le site, les anciens bâtiments ruinés sont arasés et l'espace à l'intérieur de l'enclos monastique réorganisé. L'église Saint- Sauveur au nord, le cloître qui la jouxte au sud et les quatre corps de logis sont alors reconstruits. Commencés dans la seconde moitié du XVIIe siècle (corps de logis ouest et église), les travaux se poursuivront jusqu'à la Révolution en respectant semble-t-il le parti d'origine. A la Révolution, l'abbaye est vendue. L'église devient paroissiale tandis que les anciens bâtiments conventuels sont transformés successivement en filature de coton, puis, en 1845, en maison de détention. Cette nouvelle affectation n'a pas défiguré le monument, on note seulement la surélévation du corps de logis occidental, une extension du bâti vers l'est et un réaménagement complet de l'espace intérieur. Malgré toutes ces vicissitudes, l'abbaye d'Aniane reste en Languedoc un des rares exemples complet d'architecture monastique d'Ancien Régime.Durand Geneviève. L'abbaye d'Aniane en Languedoc.
