Les sculptures romanes de l'église de Saint-Maurice-de-Gourdans (Ain)

The small church of Saint-Maurice-de-Gourdans (Ain), which was a priory of the abbey Saint-Martin d'Ainay, treasures a carved decoration that seems to go back to thefirst third of the XIIth century. It consists of a string-course surrounding the archivolt of the portal, and ornamental capitals, 6 of which adorn the single nave of the building and 9 its apse arcature. It shows very close relations with that of the abbey in Lyons and more particularly with the most precocious signs of the artistic activity which developped there at the beginning of the XIIth century.La petite église de Saint-Maurice-de-Gourdans (Ain), qui était celle d'un prieuré de l'abbaye Saint-Martin-d'Ainay, conserve un décor sculpté, paraissant remonter au premier tiers du XIIe siècle, qui est constitué par un bandeau entourant l'archivolte du portail et par des chapiteaux ornementaux dont 6 ornent la nef unique de l'édifice et 9 son arcature d'abside. Il révèle des rapports très étroits avec celui de l'abbaye lyonnaise et notamment avec les témoins les plus précoces de l'activité artistique qui s'y développa au début du XIIe siècle.Lassalle Victor.
