Les chapiteaux romans de l'église Saint-Martin-de-Vion (Ardèche)

The romanesque parts (apse and crossing) of the church Saint-Martin of Vion (Ardèche) are adorned of twenty-four capitals, whose modern polychromy hides the stylistic peculiarities and makes uniform the aspect, preventing us from distinguishing easily the capitals realized in the romanesque period from those most recently carried out. It is however possible to identify thirteen romanesque capitals, which show significant analogies with the ones decorating the aisles and the cupola in the church of the abbey Saint-Martin d'Ainay in Lyons (of which Saint-Martin of Vion was a priory). They were realized by two sculptors, the most talented of whom seems to have belonged to the workshop wich had carried out the sculptures of the Lyons abbey church (consecrated in 1107), which the other sculptor also knew.Les parties romanes (abside et croisée du transept) de l'église Saint-Martin de Vion (Ardèche) sont ornées de vingt-quatre chapiteaux dont une polychromie moderne masque les particularités stylistiques et uniformise l'aspect, si bien qu'il a été difficile jusqu'à présent de distinguer les chapiteaux exécutés à l'époque romane de ceux qui ont été réalisés à des dates plus récentes. On peut cependant identifier treize chapiteaux romans, qui présentent des analogies significatives avec ceux qui décorent les collatéraux et la coupole de l'église de l'abbaye Saint-Martin d'Ainay à Lyon (dont Saint-Martin de Vion était un prieuré). Ils ont été exécutés par deux sculpteurs dont le plus doué a sans doute appartenu à l'atelier qui avait réalisé les sculptures de l'abbatiale lyonnaise (consacrée en 1 107), que l'autre sculpteur connaissait aussi.Lassalle Victor.
