Le castrum de Calberte : Etude du quartier nord-ouest (Saint-Germain-de-Calberte, Lozère)

The castrum at Calberte, located in the heart of the Cévennes, has been the central point of a monographie study dedicated to the territory and the housing of the medieval parish of Saint-Germain de Calberte. It is the subject of an archeologie excavation programmed since 1986, the work of which has, until now, concerned the North-West district of the housing area. Four buildings, two perpendicular streets and an open area, qualified as a «public square», have been escavated. Beyond the archeologie inquiry, we are already able to establish that, in this region, the housing remains dispersed, and that some attempts at regrouping, like theoneat Calbertejailed. Thus this study is thefirst step of a larger investigation in a geographie area neglected by the medievalists.Le castrum de Calberte, situé au cœur des Cévennes, a été le point central d'une étude monographique consacrée au terroir et à l'habitat de la paroisse médiévale de Saint-Germain-de-Calberte. Il est l'objet d'une fouille archéologique programmée depuis 1986 dont le travail a, jusqu'à ce jour, essentiellement porté sur le quartier nord-ouest de l'habitat. Quatre bâtiments, deux rues perpendiculaires et un espace ouvert, qualifié de « place publique », ont été fouillés. Au-delà de l'enquête archéologique, nous pouvons déjà constater que, dans cette région, l'habitat est resté dispersé et et les quelques tentatives de regroupement comme celui de Calberte ont avorté. Aussi, ce travail est-il le premier jalon d'une étude plus large, dans une aire géographique délaissée par les médiévistes.Darnas Isabelle.
