In the pre-Islamic period, Arabic had a wide range of expressive terms referring to the different «ways of speaking » of others (whether they were dialectal varieties of Arabic, or foreign languages). This vocabulary reflects a concept of language and linguistic diversity centered on the speakers : language is not perceived as an autonomous entity, but in its relation to its users and to the discourses through which it is manifested. The notion of Arabic (al-‛ arabiyya) as an abstract entity, transcending the individual linguistic competence of any speaker, emerged progressively in the framework of the discussions about the presence of foreign terms and dialectalisms in the Koran.
