La rigueur du qualitatif. L'anthropologie comme science empirique

Anthropology shares the united epistemological field of social sciences, based upon the possibility of the terms to be truthful and not of them being false. But it also has its own characteristics unlike told by various clichés trying to be exotic, referring to the past or just partial because created by people too involved with their own field of study. These characteristics are linked to those of the long enquiries on the field (such as : witness the actors' point of view, describe their habits). The empirical obligations of anthropological interpretation can only be assumed by a methodological caution, a search for strictness and to honour the "ethnographic pact" set with the reader. We shall ask for a non-culturalist anthropology, open to new objects of studies carrying social impacts if possible. But this anthropology must be as much strict and honest about the construction and production of the field data as it is crafted and approximate due to its qualitative approach.L'anthropologie partage le régime épistémologique unifié des sciences sociales, fondé sur la plausibilité des énoncés et non sur leur falsifiabilité. Mais elle a quelques spécificités, qui, contrairement aux clichés exotiques, passéistes, ou subjectivistes trop souvent attachés à la discipline, sont liées avant tout aux caractéristiques de l'enquête de terrain prolongée (telles que : rendre compte du point de vue des acteurs, ou décrire leurs pratiques). Les contraintes empiriques de l'interprétation anthropologique ne peuvent être garanties que par la vigilance méthodologique, la quête de rigueur, et le respect du "pacte ethnographique" passé avec le lecteur. On plaidera enfin pour une anthropologie non culturaliste, ouverte à de nouveaux objets, si possible porteurs d'enjeux sociaux : mais elle doit être d'autant plus scrupuleuse et exigeante quant à la production et à l'usage de données sur le terrain qu'elle relève de l'artisanat et de l'approximation propres aux approches qualitatives.Olivier de Sardan Jean-Pierre.
