Géographie et religions: une approche territoriale du religieux et du sacré

«God is a geographer!» Thus Christian Pierret introduced the latest International Festival of Geography in Saint-Dié-des-Vosges. The purpose of the event was to explore the links between Geography and Religions. The recognition of the ancestral variety characterizing the links and intersections between such purportedly different topics distinguished the gathering. The aim of this paper is to echo the renewal of such an interest, confirm the contemporary trend, «God's return», both in the existing literature and in practice, the strength of the religious renewal, as well as the émergence of a new religious sensibility, more individualistic than institutional, more sensitive and less dogmatic. In a first part, drawing upon a number of examples taken from the schcalled traditional religions as well as from other religious manifestations, this paper underscores the diversity that characterizes the religious bonds between the formal and the symbolic links must be acknowledged so as to have a fuller territorial understanding. The second part of this contribution identifies the religious and sacred organizational principles that lead to thinking, organizing ana controlling territories. Within the urban context, the renewal of an interest in religion among geographers has taken on several forms, thus opening up new avenues of thought and multiplying grounds for common interests, even if it meant having to change the methodology over and over again. At a general level, the most recent works on the topic seem to agree on the central role of religion, or even of the sacred, in the symbolic attribution, the organization and the control of space, in the construction of otherness on the one hand, in the evolution of the forms of the city and of the way it is experienced on the other hand However, the social and political implications of such a recasting of the divine into the context of modernity still need to be identified.«Dieu est géographe!» C'est sur ce mot de Christian Pierret que débutait le dernier Festival International de Géographie de Saint-Dié-des-Vosges, manifestation placée sous le signe des rapports entre Géographie et Religions. On y reconnut la variété ancestrale des rencontres et des intersections entre ces deux champs a priori si différents. Dans cet article, les auteurs se font l'écho de la renaissance de cet intérêt, confirment l'air du temps, le «retour de Dieu» dans les pratiques et la littérature, la force du renouveau religieux, en même temps que l'émergence d'une nouvelle sensibilité religieuse, plus individuelle et moins institutionnelle, plus sensible et moins dogmatique. Dans un premier volet, et en s'appuyant sur une variété d'exemples pris aussi bien dans le référentiel des religions dites traditionnelles que dans les autres manifestations du religieux, l'article souligne la diversité des liens d'essence religieuse entre le formel et le symbolique, dont la reconnaissance paraît aujourd'hui indispensable à une bonne lecture territoriale. Le deuxième volet de l'article identifie les principes organisateurs du religieux et du sacré qui aboutissent à penser, organiser et contrôler les territoires. Dans le domaine urbain, la renaissance de l'intérêt des géographes pour le religieux a pris des formes très variées, multipliant les pistes et les rencontres quitte à renverser plusieurs fois la donne méthodologique. Les travaux les plus récents semblent devoir converger, à un niveau général, sur le rôle clé du religieux, voire du sacré, dans l'attribution symbolique, l'organisation et le contrôle de /espace, dans la construction de l'altérité d'une part, dans l'évolution des formes et du vécu de la ville d'autre part. Restent à identifier les enjeux sociaux et politiques de cette retraduction du divin dans fa modernité.Racine Jean-Bernard, Walther Olivier.
