With regards to farming in the Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 220), in some cases harrowing and soil compacting were associated with ploughing. Dry farming is fully described in the agricultural manual Qimin yaoshu (6th century AD). However, its first developments may have occurred during the Han. Moreover, the dry farming method was applied in the paddy fields of the Jiangnan and Lingnan areas following the movement of population from northern China. The models of reservoirs and paddy fields deposited in the tombs of the Wei (220-265) and Jin (265-420) periods are evidence of this major technical change.
