Ornament, Représentation, and Imaginary Animais in Bronze Age China During the Chinese Bronze Age — the period from about 1500 to 200 BC — art was dominated by imaginary animais. By the end of the period the most prominent of thèse animais was the dragon, which by then had arrived at the lizard-like form familiar to us today, the "Chinese dragon" of Han and later times. But at the beginning of the period this dragon was unknown. The imaginary animais invented by bronze casters of the Erligang period (about 1500-1300 BC) are utterly unlike Han dragons, and it was the Erligang motifs that set the course of art for the first millennium of the Bronze Age.
