Banking competition and concentration in Europe The process of concentration in the banking sector is an established phenomenon in Europe. However, most combinations have remained limited to national frameworks, and no major Pan-European fusion involving prominent players has yet taken place. The purpose of this article, first of all, is to analyze the industrial logic as well as the theoretical determinants making it possible to explain these combinations. The question is next to identify the factors which tend to accelerate or, on the contrary, retard banking integration, distinguishing those factors present during an acquisition from those which appear upon the creation of a new bank.
