European banking consolidation A period of banking consolidation opened at the beginning of the nineties. The number of mergers and acquisitions has sharply increased both in Europe and the United States. However, M&A operations in Europe have been mainly domestic, although financial globalization and the development of the European Union warrant a different evolution, one more open to cross-border acquisitions. The remodeling of the European banking landscape seems to have finally taken off with the purchase of Abbey by Santander. For over ten years this moment has been awaited. There were, in fact, good reasons for the relative banking quiescence of the nineties. The main one had to do with the fragmentation of the national banking industries. The nineties and the first years of the new century were thus devoted to consolidation on a national level. This crucial stage is now behind us. Will major cross-border operations now, at last, take place in Europe ? JEL classification : G21, G34Une période de consolidation bancaire s’est ouverte au début des années 1990. Le nombre de fusions et acquisitions a brusquement augmenté, tant en Europe qu’aux États-Unis. Pourtant, les opérations de F&A en Europe ont été surtout domestiques, bien que la globalisation financière et le développement de l’Union européenne justifient une évolution différente, plus ouverte aux acquisitions transfrontières. La transformation du paysage bancaire européen semble avoir finalement décollé avec l’achat d’Abbaye par Santander. Nous avons attendu ce moment plus de 10 ans. Il y avait, en fait, de bonnes raisons à la relative tranquillité bancaire des années 1990. La principale était la fragmentation des secteurs bancaires nationaux. Les années 1990 et les premières années du XXIe siècle ont ainsi été consacrées à la consolidation bancaire au niveau national. Cette étape cruciale est maintenant derrière nous.
