Changes in the French banking system from the twenties until now For almost 200 years, the French banking system has passed through many changes and this article aims at presenting this evolution to the Revue d'économie financière readers. Following an introductory part dealing with the situation which took place before the First World War, this article covers two different periods : before and after 1945. French banking system changes are indeed characterized by successive periods of specialization, diversification, concentration and competition.
