The Muslim conquest of Syria in the seventh century and of the Iberian peninsula in the eighth provokes, at a century's interval, the same types of reaction from the conquered Christians. The conquerors are seen at first as simply the latest wave of invaders sent by God to punish and test His faithful. Then, when Muslim domination solidifies, Christian authors assign Islam a more important role in the drama of the last days, making Muhammad a precursor of Antichrist and a heresiarch. Finally, some Christian authors dispute with Muslims, using the very terms of Muslim theology to defend Christianity.
