Santa Maria Nova (Santa Francesca Romana), ou la navicula d'Alexandre III

This study is an iconographical analysis of the apse mosaic of the church of Santa Maria Nova in Rome. Acknowledging Pope Alexander III (1159-1181) as the patron of the decorative design, the author aims at showing how certain iconographical choices reflect a definite political climate. That which has been splitting the Church up into the Antipope's supporters and those of Alexander III since the pontifical election of 1159. The four apostles' depiction - Peter, Andrew (right), James and John (left) - next to the Virgin and the Child appear as an allusion to the fish draught story (Mt 4, 18-22). A New Testament episode, abundantly discussed among the Fathers of the Church, that would have allowed Alexander III - back in Rome after a long exile - to reassess Peter's primate by means of the image of the Navicula Petri, a symbol of the roman Church. In the second part of this study, the analysis of the unusual lost façade decoration and the historical background postpones the realization of the decorative programme around 1165/67. Completed by the time of the return of Alexander III from a four-year exile in France, the decoration could be seen as a departure from the image of the Church as depicted in the apse mosaic of Santa Maria in Trastevere, headquarters of a new antipope Pascal III (1164-1168).Cette étude est une analyse iconographique de la mosaïque absidale de l'église Santa Maria Nova à Rome. Reconnaissant dans le pape Alexandre III (1159-1181) le commanditaire du décor, l'A. tente de montrer comment certains choix iconographiques reflètent un climat politique bien déterminé, à savoir celui de la scission au sein de l'Église entre les partisans de l'antipape et ceux d'Alexandre III après le schisme de 1159. La représentation de quatre apôtres - Pierre et André (à droite), Jacques et Jean (à gauche) à côté de la Vierge à l'Enfant - semble être une allusion à la pêche miraculeuse (Mt 4, 18-22), épisode du Nouveau Testament abondamment discuté par les Pères de l'Église, et qui aurait permis à Alexandre III, de retour à Rome après un long exil, de réaffirmer la primauté de Pierre grâce à l'image de la Navicula Petri, symbole de l'Église romaine. Dans la seconde partie de l'article, l'analyse du décor inhabituel de la façade disparue et le contexte historique repoussent aux années 1165/67 la datation du programme décoratif. Achevé au retour d'Alexandre III, après quatre années d'exil en France, le décor pourrait être considéré comme une nouvelle représentation du Christ semblable à celle de la mosaïque absidale de Santa Maria in Trastevere, siège du nouvel antipape Pascal III (1164-1168).Enckell Julliard Julie.
