L'Autriche industrielle : une activité à double face

Austrian industry: a two-sided economy. — Austria is entering the European Union as a divided country: Western Austria flourishes through the impetus of Germany, Central Austria is caught up in the redeployment of its heavy industry and Eastern Austria experiences depression, the Viennese area being an exception however because of its significance and its high-tech industry. But this integration has been thoroughly prepared. Austrian industries are used as a springboard for Germany towards Eastern Europe. On the one hand, they are subcontracted by Germany and they fit the German imposed standards; on the other hand, they have their own subcontractors outside the E.U. Because of the extreme interweaving of German and Austrian industries, the two countries are an entity that can be regarded as a rather homogeneous power of 100 million inhabitants.L'Autriche entre dans l'Union européenne divisée, avec un Ouest prospère sous l'impulsion de l'Allemagne, un Centre empêtré dans les reconversions des industries lourdes et un Est en dépression, où toutefois Vienne se distingue par son poids et la place des hautes technologies. Mais cette intégration a été mûrement préparée; les industries autrichiennes modernisées servent de tremplin à l'économie allemande vers l'Est; sous-traitantes pour celle-ci, et adaptées aux normes qu'elle impose, elles ont leurs propres sous-traitants hors de l'Union.
