Urban environment and morphociimatic risk: Quito, Ecuador (1900-1988).— The city of Quito (2 800 m) is frequently subject to morphociimatic hazards: floods, mud flows, caved-in pavements, caused by filling in the natural drainage network. A diachronic approach to these hazards has been adopted, based on the analysis of daily newspapers (1900-1988) in order to identify the vulnerable areas and assess their frequencies. The method developed to analyse mostly qualitative data is presented: a data set of newspapers' articles facilitated the mapping of 567 hazards which have been correlated with urban development.
