From subjective to objective space: the route through the labyrinth. — The materiality of the geographical world constitutes, through our "perceptive faith", the foundation of our representations. As a structure it is impregnated with the presence of, and the historical traces left by, social links of production. If one accepts such hypotheses it is necessary, in order to prevent geographical research from lapsing into "psychologism", to complement the concepts of space as representation and of lived-in space with the notion of socio- spatial metastructure, an unavoidable stage on the way to the formation of the territory: the rough superposition of private experiences which space makes into social ones. Métastructures and territories then figure in the objectivized pattern of socio- spatial formations, thus providing a key to the interpretation of a geographical universe pregnant with meaning, which is institutionalized by the material and abstract determinations issuing from the social body.La matérialité du monde géographique fonde, par le relais de notre «foi perceptive», nos représentations. En tant que structure, elle s'imprègne de l'actualité et de la trace historique des rapports sociaux de production. Si l'on admet ces hypothèses et si l'on veut éviter une dérive de la recherche géographique vers le «psychologisme», il convient de compléter les concepts d'espaces représenté et vécu par la notion de méta- structure socio-spatiale, étape obligée sur le chemin du territoire: cette superposition approximative d'expériences privées que l'espace socialise. Dès lors, métastructures et territoires s'inscrivent dans le schéma objectivé des formations socio-spatiales, grille de lecture d'un univers géographique pregnant qu'institutionnalisent les déterminations matérielles et idéelles émanant du corps social.Di Méo Guy.
