Immigration and ethnicity in Australia. — Australia since World War II has become the country, other than Israel, with the largest proportion of immigrants in her population, only 40 percent of which are British. Sydney and Melbourne have large concentrations of persons from Italy, Greece, Malta, slavia which have attracted a wide range of voluntary associations, shops and services in areas of ethnic concentration. Nevertheless, widespread residential dispersion of all groups is proceeding satisfactorily. The immigrant groups are overwhelmingly urbanized — favouring the large southern metropolitan cities, and the secondary industrial cities of Wollongong, Geelong and Whyalla, now seriously affected by recession.
