Aperçu sur la géographie théorique.

A survey of theoretical geography. Introductory article on the principal characteristics of theoretical geography, as seen in reading recent work. These features are : a) the priority given to the elaboration of explanatory theory; b) the comparison of the theoretical scheme and the reality and the evaluation of the difference between theory and observations; c) the recourse, for this comparison, to statistical methods and computer techniques; d) the idea that by the intermediary of general theories a certain scientific unity can be approached; e) the idea that the new ways of research are situated on border lines common to several disciplines. It seems wrong to continue to speak of a " new geography ", this now being almost twenty years old, or of " quantitative geography ", since classical inductive geography also made use of certain quantities. But, whilst classical geography and cartography have remained "numerical", the Scandinavian-English-speaking school has used "statistical laws"; this is the first fundamental difference. The second lies in the efforts of " theoretical geography " in constructing theories to overcome classical geography's essential weakness : its inability to generalize.L'article présente les principales caractéristiques de la géographie théorique, à travers la lecture d'ouvrages récents. On retient : a) la priorité donnée à la construction d'une théorie explicative; b) la confrontation du schéma théorique à la réalité et ia mesure de la différence entre théorie et observations; c) le recours, pour cette confrontation, à des méthodes statistiques et à des techniques informatiques; d) l'idée que par l'intermédiaire de théories générales on peut s'acheminer vers une certaine unité des sciences; e) l'idée que les voies nouvelles de recherche se situent sur les frontières où se rencontrent plusieurs disciplines. Il semble erroné de parler encore de « nouvelle géographie » puisqu'elle a aujourd'hui presque vingt ans d'âge, ainsi que de « géographie quantitative », puisque la géographie inductive classique a aussi utilisé certaines quantités. Mais, tandis que la géographie et la cartographie classiques sont restées « numériques », l'école scandinave-anglo-saxonne a utilisé les «lois statistiques»; c'est une première différence fondamentale. La seconde tient dans les efforts de la «géographie théorique » pour vaincre par la construction de théories l'infirmité essentielle de la géographie classique : son incapacité à généraliser.Rimbert Sylvie.
