Le dogme trinitaire et l'essor de son iconographie en Occident de l'époque carolingienne au IVe Concile du Latran (1215)

Relying largely upon images that are often overlooked, this article reexamines the origins of the principal iconographic types of the Trinity in Western art. After a rapid survey of the symbols and trinitarian imagery in biblical theophanies (Abraham receiving the Angels, the Baptism of Christ, etc.), it dwells upon the origin and development of non narrative, "synthetic" images. In an area where the theological legitimacy of the image could not be verified, since God is by definition invisible, and for which the Christian pictorial tradition offered few convincing models, western artists display an unusually inventive spirit, while complying with biblical, liturgical, exegetical and theological suggestions. Encouraged both by their patrons and historical circumstances, the artists span a period marked by the discussion of the Filioque (which ended in schism in 1054), by the emergence of Trinitarian devotions (masses, offices, feasts), and by the unprecedented development of theological speculation concerning this article of the faith. From the historical point of view, the authors reaffirm the importance of Anglo-saxon art in the "trinitarian creation", and bring to light the role played by Italy and France. Morphologically, however, two different processes seem to be at work. On the one hand, there is a trinitarian meaning hidden in the Majestas Domini, preceded by the appearance of various binary combinations (God symbolized by "the hand" of the Father ; Christ as the pascal lamb or Christ-Emmanuel in the bosom of the Father, or the crucifîed Christ supported by a seated God the Father ; a dove for the Holy Spirit). These give rise finally to the traditional iconographic types with their accompanying symbols (Throne of Mercy, Trinity in two medallions, Paternity) or detripling of the Majestas (triandric Trinity). The other process is allied to Psalm 109 and the investiture of the resurrected Messiah "on the right hand of God". This Psalm was for a long time interpreted literally (God the Father and the Son, without the Dove), but from the thirteenth century onward, the image that illustrates the Psalm is progressively "dogmatized" by the addition of the Dove between the Father and the Son. In the end, the Trinity of the Psalter and the Throne of Mercy became the western stereotypes. A new image of the Christian God was thus constructed and validated, a representation that was less glorious but more familiar, and in which Christ's cross played an essential role.S'appuyant souvent sur un matériel rarement exploré, l'article tente de faire le point sur la naissance des principaux types iconographiques occidentaux de la Trinité. Passant rapidement sur les symboles et les images des théophanies bibliques à dimension trinitaire (Hospitalité d'Abraham, Baptême du Christ, etc.), il privilégie les principales images « synthétiques » non narratives (Trinité triandrique, Paternité, Trône de grâce, Trinité du Psautier) et leur genèse. Dans un domaine où la légitimité théologique de l'image, du fait de l'invisibilité de Dieu, n'était pas assurée, et pour lequel la tradition d'art chrétien offrait peu de modèles convaincants, les artistes latins ont fait preuve d'un esprit inventif tout en tenant compte des suggestions de la Bible, de la liturgie, de l'exégèse et de la théologie. Leurs commanditaires les y encouragèrent sans doute, mais les circonstances historiques plus encore : l'époque est aussi celle de la discussion au sujet du Filioque (qui se soldera par le schisme de 1054), de la diffusion d'une dévotion particulière à la Trinité (messe, office, fête), et d'un développement sans précédent de la spéculation théologique concernant cet article de foi. Sur le plan historique, les auteurs d'une part confirment l'importance de l'art anglais dans la « création trinitaire » et d'autre part éclairent d'une nouvelle lumière le rôle joué dans ce domaine par l'Italie et la France. D'un point de vue morphologique, la constitution de ce champ semble résulter de deux processus distincts. D'une part, une exploitation de la signification trinitaire cachée de la Majestas Domini, précédée par l'apparition de Binités (ou Majestés binitaires) variées, où l'on voit tantôt un symbole du Père (une main), tantôt un symbole du Christ (Agneau ou Christ-Emmanuel « dans le sein du Père », ou Christ en croix entre les jambes du Siégeant), tantôt une Colombe, jusqu'à ce que naissent les types proprement dits, par addition des symboles (Trône de grâce, Trinité à deux médaillons, Paternité) ou « détriplement » de la Majestas (Trinité triandrique). L'autre processus est lié au Psaume 109 et à l'investiture du Messie ressuscité « à la droite » de Dieu : longtemps littérale (Binités du Psautier, sans Colombe), l'image qui orne ce Psaume sera progressivement « dogmatisée » par addition de la Colombe entre Père et Fils à partir du XIIIe s. Pour finir, la Trinité du Psautier et le Trône de grâce deviendront des images stéréotypées de la Trinité chez les Latins. Ainsi s'est construit et finalement imposé, pour longtemps, un nouveau visage du Dieu chrétien, moins glorieux et plus proche, où la Croix du Christ joue un rôle déterminant.Boespflug François, zaluska Yolanta.
