Soon after the death of Henry I, his daughter Mathilda went into Normandy. She sailed across the Channel in 1139 and after she defeated her rival, Stephen of Blois, took the title of domina Anglorum, which is to be understood more as a first approach to the throne than a regency on behalf of her son. Henry is never mentioned in documents issued by her before July 1141. Henry, when nine years old, went to England with his uncle Robert of Gloucester, who has him educated at his Bristol court.
