According to Philippe Ariès, the Middle Ages was unaware of childhood as a special stage of life. However, in Occitan literature the child is often an object of affection, interest and special care ; the texts highlight particular characteristics of childhood and employ an appropriate vocabulary to designate children. But they see the child principally in terms of patriarchy and lineage. The child is generally male ; girls are marginalized. The child takes its place in a complex social and ideological context of competing value Systems and social structures : lineage, feudalism, the Church, the monarchy, masculine companionship, and marriage.
