L'enfant dans la littérature occitane avant 1230

According to Philippe Ariès, the Middle Ages was unaware of childhood as a special stage of life. However, in Occitan literature the child is often an object of affection, interest and special care ; the texts highlight particular characteristics of childhood and employ an appropriate vocabulary to designate children. But they see the child principally in terms of patriarchy and lineage. The child is generally male ; girls are marginalized. The child takes its place in a complex social and ideological context of competing value Systems and social structures : lineage, feudalism, the Church, the monarchy, masculine companionship, and marriage. In the interplay of hierarchies the child is sometimes sacrificed, though not without emotion or exaltation.Selon Philippe Ariès, le sentiment de l'enfance n'existait pas au moyen âge. Dans la littérature occitane cependant, l'enfant est souvent un objet d'affection, d'intérêt, et de soins spéciaux, et les textes témoignent d'un sentiment de la particularité enfantine et d'un vocabulaire de l'enfance. Mais ils envisagent l'enfant avant tout comme représentant du patriarcat et du lignage. L'enfant est surtout mâle ; les filles sont marginalisées. Il prend sa place dans un contexte social et idéologique complexe, qui comprend des systèmes de valeurs et des structures sociales en état de concurrence : le lignage, la féodalité, l'Église, la monarchie, le compagnonnage masculin, et le mariage.
