Ireland has a distinctive Romanesque tradition, the «Hiberno-Romanesque», in which stylistic ideas of indigenous, pre-Romanesque, and foreign, Romanesque, origin are fused. The traditional pre-Romanesque form of church façade continued to be used in the 12th century when the Romanesque style was in vogue ; in most cases the only significant difference between pre-Romanesque and Romanesque work is in the form and decoration of the portal. The popularity of the decorated Romanesque portal in Ireland suggests that patrons were more interested in the point at which one entered the church than in the façace itself.
