Numerous historians have emphasized the consequences of technical innovations on Medieval social structures. The art of warfare is a case in point, leading as it did to the creation and development of a social-professional entity generally termed Chivalry, based on the new method of fighting on horseback using the couched lance. Recent research had claimed that this revolutionary technique did not appear before the XIIth century. An earlier date is here put forward. This article has drawn on various sources : Christian and moslem narratives, epics, and illustrated documents of 1050-1150 vintage.
