The study of iconography, an integral part of art history, must develop out of the image itself and not out of its doctrinal content. Whatever the dependence of an image on a idea, the theological, political or other kind of message only appears in the representation. Thus, it is the way in which the representation is formulated which determines its art historical classification. Doctrinal history only enters into this operation in order to explain the meaning and evolution of a set of images, or of an iconographical type or motif.
