Giambattista Marino's few prose writings are enco- miums of art as well as reflexions on the notion of image. Marino explores the link between the arts and the sacred through the emblem of the Sindon of Christ. The images art creates are sacred because they hide what they say so as to say it, so that the force of revelation they carry is similar to the force of revelation carried by the miracle. Metaphor is not a mere trope, but a conceptual tool of revelation : its maraviglia is of the same order as the miracle.Graziani Françoise. L'image merveille. Figurer et dire selon le Cavalier Marin.
