With the aid of examples chosen from the romanesque monuments of Caen, this short essay attempts to show now the different types of masons'marks can be a source of information for the study of the 11th to 12th centuries. Despite their fragility, which has lead to the disappearance of a large number, these marks engraved in the stone, are still numerous and are evidently underused.
