The paper is concerned with the inter- relationship between macro- and micro- environmental issues in residential care for the elderly, and begins with a discussion of the historical development of residential care for older people. Changes in the past decade will be addressed in the light of demographic and social changes. Such a discussion will allow us to look at: changes in and consequences of the distribution of residential care, i.e. national profile and local examples (maps provided); planning implications; services implications; changes in and consequences of the current accessibility and utilisation of residential care.
