This paper attempts to address the empirical short-comings of traditional urban models and to build on an emerging litterature in transportation planning which examines the impact of social or non-economic variables on travel behavior. The paper addresses variations in travel mode and time to work by sex and attempts to link those variations to economic variables at the household level, as do traditional models. The analyses show, however, that men and women have differences in travel patterns which cannot be explained by traditional economic variables. In two major U.S. metropolitan areas, Dallas-Ft.
