En utilisant un découpage spécifique en régions fonctionnelles, l'article montre que la déconcentration de population s'est produite aux trois principales échelles géographiques du système urbain britannique, pendant les années 1971-81. Notamment, la rapide croissance de la population n'a pas été limitée à la périphérie des métropoles, mais elle a également touché des villes relativement éloignées, incluant même des régions marginales.
