As the lease on Hong Kong steadily approaches its term, in 1997, Cantonese has now become, more than before, the dominant language of Hong Kong. The study reported here was conducted in 1985 and 1986, with the aim of probing public opinion on the question of the choice between Cantonese and putonghua as the official medium of oral communication in Hong Kong after 1997. Among the questions posed were the following : Do you think that Hong Kong should choose its official medium of oral communication in 1997 ?
