L'exercitus Africae inspiratrice de l'armée française d'Afrique : Ense et aratro

The participation of the army in the archeological exploration of Algeria was particularly outstanding. It can be explained by the continuation of an intellectual tradition (notably materialised by the investigations that took place during the expedition in Egypt : creation in 1840 of the Commission for the scientific exploration of Algeria), by the complete control of the territory by an army which alone provided the equipment and men needed, but furthermore, in the field of classical archeology, by the wish of the African Army to rediscover the legacy of the exercitus Africae, of which it wanted to be worthy. Reporting the relics and occasionally restoring them, (when more pressing concrete constraints did not urge to destroy them), drawing parallels with the march of Roman legions it was proud of surpassing, praising the superposition of Roman and French colonization settlements, the African Army justified its achievement by a permanent reference to its predecessor, whose civilian or military accomplishments it renewed, hoping to derive the same glory from them.La participation de l'armée à l'exploration archéologique de l'Algérie fut particulièrement marquante. Elle s'explique par la poursuite d'une tradition intellectuelle (matérialisée notamment par les investigations qui accompagnèrent l'expédition d'Egypte : création en 1840 de la Commission d'exploration scientifique de l'Algérie), par la main-mise sur le territoire d'une armée qui disposait seule du matériel et des hommes nécessaires, mais aussi, dans le domaine de l'archéologie classique, par le désir de l'Armée d'Afrique de recueillir l'héritage de l' exercitus Africae dont elle se voulait digne. Signalant les vestiges, les restaurant à l'occasion (quand des contraintes concrètes plus pressantes n'amenaient pas à leur destruction), établissant des parallèles avec la marche des légions romaines qu'elle se flattait de surpasser, se louant de la superposition des centres de colonisation romains et français, l'Armée d'Afrique justifiait son œuvre par une référence constante à sa devancière, dont elle renouvelait les réalisations, militaires ou civiles, espérant tirer une gloire comparable.Dondin-Payre Monique.
