This article discusses two marble sculptures from the Saint Raymond museum in Toulouse. The free standing head is of an unknown provenance and is a rare example of a « Type A» portrait of Socrates. The original was probably made a short time after the death of the philosopher. The fragmentary relief is a part of a remarkable collection of sculptures that was discovered during the nineteenth century at Martres-Tolosane (Chiragan) : in this example we see a sitting man in a meditative pose, near a pillar crowned with an original Dionysian head. The figure is probably meant to be Socrates.
