Nouvelles recherches sur les cryptoportiques d'Arles et la topographie du centre de la colonie

After a brief survey of the history of the excavation of the 'cryptoporticos' and former diggings, the author makes a distinction between four main stages in the building process, using previously unknown documents as well as recent soundings and observations (1990-1991). 1. Pre-Roman time (6th to 1st century B.C.). A set of perpendicular roads used quite constantly, or without any change. 2. Augustan age. Building of the 'crypto-porticos' and of the Forum ; and to the north a gallery of shops without direct connection with the Forum. In front of these shops, there was a square rather than a street, which might be the maellum. Excavations carried out in the 'cryptoporticos' show that those were not well maintened. 3. End of the first and beginning of the 2nd century (?). A building was erected in the middle of the north gallery, cutting it into two parts. There was still no communication between the Forum and the north square. 4. Late Antiquity. Building of an arcaded gallery in front of the shops and enlarging of the central building towards the north, with the construction of a new facade made with archeological material previously used. From the 5th century onwards, the slab floor of the Forum was occupied by parasitical dwelling houses, and galleries were used as places for storage.Après un exposé sur l'histoire du dégagement des cryptoportiques et les fouilles anciennes, l'auteur distingue quatre phases principales de construction, d'après des documents inédits et des sondages et observations récents (1990-1991). 1. Epoque préromaine (VIe-Ier s. av. J.-C). Ensemble de rues perpendiculaires, utilisées presque sans interruption ou changement. 2. Epoque augustéenne. Construction des cryptoportiques et le forum, avec au nord une galerie à boutiques, sans liaison directe avec le forum. Devant ces boutiques se trouvait une place plutôt qu'une rue, peut-être le macellum. La fouille du sol dans les cryptoportiques montre qu'ils étaient très mal entretenus. 3. Fin Ier - début IIe siècle (?). Construction d'un édifice au milieu de la galerie nord, coupant celle-ci en deux. Il n'y a toujours pas de communication entre le forum et la place au nord. 4. Antiquité tardive. Construction d'une galerie à arcades devant les boutiques et agrandissement de l'édifice central vers le nord, avec construction d'une nouvelle façade, faite avec des éléments d'architecture remployés. A partir du Ve siècle, le dallage du forum est occupé par des habitations parasitaires, et les galeries sont utilisées comme lieu de stockage.Heijmans Marc.
