Glanum, oppidum Latinum de Narbonnaise : à propos de cinq dédicaces impériales récemment découvertes

In 1989 the excavation of the dromos well in Glanum yielded five dedications on marble : the two first ones were addressed to Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus in 166 ; the three other ones to Septimus Severus, Julia Domna and Caracalla probably in 198. After an attempt at localizing the sites of the monuments on the Forum through the study of remains of pedestals, Severian dedications bearing the signature Glanienses are questionned : up to now, only the signature of Glanici was known. The status of Glanum is then questionned ; it was traditionnally considered as being part of the Roman colony of Aries or the Latin colony of Avignon. Glanum though, belongs as Avignon to the category of the oppida Latina. With the help of different sources, firstly texts (Strabo, Pliny), secondly epigraphy and then archeology these oppida Latina are proposed to be acknowledged as county town of autonomous Latin cities, which sometimes bear the honorary title of colony, and whose magistrates carry on in the town itself the office, which enables them to be considered as Roman citizens. This makes the difference between the oppida adtributa and even more with the ignobilia. These oppida Latina have a variable size and seem independent from the nearby colonies, whether they are Roman or Latin. And last, the issue of what was to become of Glanum is tackled ; this city prosperous at least until the end of the second century was neglected before the end of the third century and linked then to the diocese of Avignon.En 1989, la fouille du puits à dromos de Glanum a livré cinq dédicaces sur marbre : les deux premières adressées à Marc Aurèle et Lucius Verus en 166 ; les trois autres, à Septime Sévère, Julia Domna et Caracalla, sans doute en 198. Après avoir tenté de localiser l'emplacement de ces monuments sur le forum, par l'étude de vestiges de socles, on s'interroge sur la signature Glanienses des dédicaces sévériennes : on ne connaissait à ce jour que des Glanici. On pose ensuite la question du statut de Glanum, traditionnellement considéré comme dépendant d'Arles, colonie romaine, ou d'Avignon, colonie latine ; l'agglomération relève cependant, comme cette dernière, de la catégorie des oppida Latina. A l'aide des sources textuelles (Strabon, Pline), épigraphiques, archéologiques, on propose de reconnaître dans ces oppida Latina les chefs-lieux de cités latines autonomes, portant parfois le titre honorifique de colonie, dont les magistrats exercent sur place le mandat qui leur donne la citoyenneté romaine (cela les distingue des oppida adtributa et, plus encore, ignobilia) ; dotés d'un territoire de taille variable, ils paraissent indépendants des colonies voisines, qu'elles soient romaines ou latines. On aborde enfin le problème du devenir de Glanum, prospère au moins jusqu'à la fin du IIe s., mais abandonné avant la fin du me s. et rattaché au diocèse d'Avignon.Roth-Congès Anne.
