The principles of human resources management are under high pressure in Japan because of the low growth perspectives and the aging working population. Nowadays, large firms have had to forsake a number of permanent employees. Will this mean the end of the lifetime employment system, a relevant issue indeed considering the incentive theory. Reducing the work force is not incompatible with the lifetime employment system. This article studies how large firms try to reduce labour input within the framework of this system.
