This article explores some aspects of the notion of Providence in Restoration nonconformist writings, with particular reference to stories of judgements befalling unrepentent sinners. Through the study of how a particular tale survives in manuscripts and printed accounts, it is possible to define some generic conventions and to show how a belief in Providence was shared across the religious spectrum by the conformist clergy, Presbyterians and even Independents. Finally, the study of a particular manuscript compiled by Matthew Poole shows how the idea of a scientific organisation of ministers to record the extraordinary manifestations of Providence was shared in 1657 by parties that were later to oppose each other during the Restoration.Duna...
