The article argues that the landscape garden was a powerful epistemological model in so far as it produced a non-discursive paradigm. It studies several mo des of combination of 'Sister Arts' - e.g. architecture in the landscape, or pictorial analogues - to show that their intended appeal rests on the simultaneous perception of differences between artistic modes, in complex harmonies of perception and imagination. It gives formal analyses of motifs such as the Palladian Bridge to show how their function was to manifest the irreducible multiplicity of styles and aesthetic experiences.Martinet Marie-Madeleine.
